BULGARIANS IN SAN FRANCISCO HAVE ORGANIZED AN EVENT AND CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT TEACH FOR BULGARIA
A week before Christmas committed and motivated Bulgarians living in San Francisco proved that long distances could not stop them from believing and working for the success of the children in Bulgaria. Nearly 50 people supported the mission for equal access to quality education and the work of Teach for Bulgaria at a special event held on December 16.
The attendees had the opportunity to get acquainted in detail with the work and goals of the foundation in Bulgaria. They learnt more about what had motivated the participants in the program to become teachers to students, most of them in need, and how daily challenges in the classroom develop their leadership skills.
“Bulgaria is in my heart, and I believe that its future depends on all of us no matter where we are. The fact that we do not get face to face with the problems of high illiteracy, unemployment and lack of commitment of young people in Bulgaria does not mean that we should close our eyes and say to ourselves that it is OK since these problems do not concern us directly. On the contrary, by ignoring them we become accomplices in these problems getting worse”, Pavlina Yanakieva shared her motivation to participate in the event’s organization.
“As a parent, I can see no other cause that is more sacred than giving a chance to a child to fulfil his or her full potential and develop the values and love that he or she carries inside. Through this event, I wanted to voice the gravest problems in Bulgaria and share with my compatriots the wonders that Teach for Bulgaria does for the children and the future of our country. I firmly believe that the positive change starts within each and every one of us, and when there is a clear goal to unite people for a deed that is good and humanitarian, then there are no borders to stop that change”, adds Pavlina further on.
This is the first time such a meeting has been organized by the Bulgarian community in the Silicon Valley in the USA. Among the guests of the event were Bulgarian professionals from the private and public sector of various industries: IT, finance, law, construction, education, design, etc. The purpose of the event was to popularize the mission of the organization among our compatriots as well as to raise funds and promote a campaign to support the teachers working under the Teach for Bulgaria program in 10 regions of the country. Here, you can learn more about the campaign on Global Giving, which is still active.
We express our gratitude to the organizers of the meeting – Pavlina Yanakieva, Deyan Vitanov, Spas Bozhanov and Lachezar Atanasov, as well as to all the attendees from the West Coast Bulgarian community for their commitment and support.
